Brazilian Choral Educator
Karen Zeferino is a Brazilian conductor.
As a child, she began piano lessons with her father and joined the UEM Music School Choir, actively participating in her church’s music ministry. These early experiences inspired her to pursue a degree in conducting.
While studying at the State University of Maringá, she was an assistant conductor for the Youth Choir, Coro Oficina, and Coro Escola. Instrumental ensembles, including the UEM Flute and String Ensemble. Zeferino also participated in masterclasses in Brazil with renowned conductors such as William Coelho, Daisuke Soga, Alessandro Sangiorgi, and Abel Rocha. She conducted orchestral performances at the Londrina Music Festival in 2018 and with the Londrina Symphony Orchestra in 2019.
Karen completed her Master of Music in Choral Conducting at the University of Missouri-Columbia, where she was an assistant conductor for the University Singers, Concert Chorale, and Choral Union. In 2023, she served as the guest conductor of the Columbia Chamber Choir, collaborating with the Choral Arts Alliance of Missouri, to present a program entirely dedicated to Brazilian repertoire.
She continued her development by attending masterclasses with distinguished conductors, including Dr. Marques L.A. Garrett, Dr. Derrick Fox, and Rick Bjella. In July 2022, she conducted the Tacoma Symphony and Tacoma Symphony Voices as part of the Cascade Conducting Masterclass.
Zeferino is a Doctor of Musical Arts Candidate in Choral Conducting at the University of Memphis in Dr. Francis Cathlina's conducting studio. During her residency in Memphis, she served as the Assistant Director of Music at St. Louis Catholic Church, the city's most prominent Catholic parish, where she studied organ and assisted with the planning and execution of liturgical music. As a graduate assistant, she assisted Mazi, the University Singers, in addition to teaching Basic and Advanced Conducting courses.
Currently, she serves as Choral Director and Organist at O'Fallon First United Methodist Church and teaches voice and piano lessons.
